Doris Geraldine Lightfoot

January 13, 1940 ~ July 9, 2020 (age 80)

Doris Geraldine Lightfoot went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 9, 2020 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on January 13, 1940 in Guilford County to the late Rev. Frank McDaniel and Winnie Lee McDaniel of High Point, NC.

Doris graduated from Allen Jay High School where she was a valued member of the women’s basketball team, a sport that she would play later in life with acclaim as part of the traveling women’s basketball league. She also enjoyed competing in racquetball tournaments at the High Point YMCA in her adult years.

After high school, Doris married her high school sweetheart, Richard Louis Lightfoot, they settled in High Point to start a life together and raise a family. Doris was a loving wife and mother, happily working alongside Richard to make a loving home while raising three children and supporting Richard’s work in the High Point Furniture Industry. Doris loved taking family trips to the beach and mountains of North Carolina, singing in the church choir, and supporting Christian missions around the world. She and Richard were very active members of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church, promoting ministries in India and later Samaritan’s Purse with the hope of bringing people to love the Lord Jesus Christ.

Doris had a love of sports and actively supported her children and grandchildren in whatever sporting endeavors they chose to pursue. She maintained her life-long love of basketball, playing in the senior league 60-65 age group, the Silver Spirits, where they placed 3rd in the National Championship Senior Olympic Games in 2010. She was active at the Thomasville YMCA in later years becoming a joyful pickleball player that she looked forward to playing daily.

Her love for life was driven by her passion for the Gospel and permeated everything that she did. Her undeniable faith and love in Jesus Christ were witnessed by anyone who knew her, and her spiritual gift of intercessory prayer undeniably changed many lives.

Doris is survived by her loving husband Richard of 62 years; her children Terry L. Lightfoot and spouse Melony C. Lightfoot of Raleigh, Richard Lance Lightfoot and spouse Lisa J. Lightfoot of Greensboro, and Sandy L. Robertson and spouse Bryan K. Robertson of Winston-Salem; and her brother, Billy McDaniel and spouse Brenda McDaniel of High Point; and sister Brenda M. Rush and spouse Gaylord R. Rush of Greensboro; four grandchildren – Daniel Lightfoot, Christopher Lightfoot and Meredith Lightfoot, and Noah Robertson; various nieces and nephews, and extended and loving family.

A Memorial Service will be held at Pleasant Garden Baptist Church in Pleasant Garden, NC on Sunday, July 12th at 3pm, with visitation from 2-2:45pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Doris’s memory to Samaritan’s Purse.
